How Often Should You Wash Your Car?

A fixed schedule is the right starting point - roughly every 1 to 2 weeks for a car driven daily, since that's about how long it takes for road film and brake dust to start bonding to the clear coat under normal conditions.

But a calendar alone isn't the full picture. Contaminants like bird droppings, tree sap, and bug splatter are acidic, and they don't wait politely for your next scheduled wash - they can begin etching into the clear coat within a day or two, especially in hot weather when the reaction speeds up. If your car is parked outdoors under trees, treat fresh contamination as an immediate spot-clean rather than something to leave for the weekend.

On the other end, a car that's driven occasionally and kept in a garage doesn't need the same frequency. Washing a clean car too often just adds needless risk of fine scratching for no real benefit, and a quick waterless detail spray between washes is usually enough to keep dust off.

Daily Driver: Every 1-2 Weeks

What Wash Method Should You Use?

The right method depends on your supplies and how dirty the car is.

Independent detailing research consistently points to one root cause behind most fine scratching: contaminated wash water being reapplied to the paint - which is exactly what the two-bucket method is built to prevent.

Two-Bucket Hand Wash

  • One bucket for soap, one for rinsing your mitt - each with a grit guard at the bottom
  • Use two mitts: one for the body, a separate one for lower panels and rockers
  • Lowest risk of swirl marks when done correctly; best for moderate to heavy dirt

Rinseless Wash

  • Good for water restrictions or apartment parking
  • Requires a proper rinseless-wash solution, not diluted shampoo
  • Best for light to moderate grime

Touchless Automatic Wash

  • Highest risk of fine scratching
  • Shared brushes have touched hundreds of other cars
  • Convenient, but not a paint-safe long-term habit

What Water Temperature Should You Use?

Temperature affects both how well the soap works and how safely it rinses off.

Lukewarm (Ideal)

  • Roughly 37-54°C is the sweet spot for most washes
  • Helps soap lift dirt and grease more effectively than cold water
  • Rinses cleanly without dissolving wax or sealant

Cold / Ambient

  • Safest choice on hot panels, coatings, and fresh sealant
  • Less effective on oily grime and stubborn contamination
  • Fine for a quick rinse or light wash

Avoid: Hot Water

  • Water above roughly 60°C risks paint and glass damage
  • Speeds up drying, which increases streaking and water spots
  • Never needed for a routine wash, regardless of season

What Soap Should You Use?

Not all car soaps are formulated the same way, and the difference matters more than it looks. A proper car shampoo is pH-neutral, meaning it lifts dirt and road grime without stripping away wax, sealant, or ceramic coating protection in the process.

Dish soap and household degreasers, by contrast, are engineered specifically to cut through oil and grease - which means they're just as effective at cutting through your paint's protective layer, and they'll dry out rubber trim and seals over repeated use.

If your car is ceramic coated, it's worth going a step further with a shampoo specifically labelled coating-safe: some general-purpose car shampoos still contain waxes or gloss-enhancing fillers that can dull a coating's hydrophobic performance over time, even though they're otherwise gentle on the paint underneath.

pH-Neutral Shampoo

  • Safe for wax, sealant, and everyday bare paint
  • High-foam formulas add extra lubrication
  • Avoid anything labelled as a degreaser

Coating-Safe Shampoo

  • Free of waxes and fillers that dull hydrophobic performance
  • Usually labelled specifically for ceramic-coated paint
  • Pair with a dedicated coating booster occasionally

What to Avoid

  • Dish soap and household detergents strip protection
  • Anything with added wax if you plan to coat soon
  • Unlabelled bulk or generic soaps

Foam Gun or Straight to Hand Wash?

A pre-wash foam should be left to dwell for 5-10 minutes so it has time to break down bonded grime - just not so long that it dries on the surface, which causes streaking of its own.

Pre-Rinse or Foam First

  • Lifts loose grit before any mitt makes contact
  • A foam cannon adds 5-10 minutes of cling time for extra loosening
  • Work in shade - foam dries faster (and less effectively) in direct sun

Straight to Hand Wash

  • Only reasonable on a car that's already very clean
  • Skips the safest step in the whole process
  • Loose grit gets dragged by the mitt on first contact

Using a Pressure Washer Safely

A pressure washer speeds up the pre-rinse, but the wrong settings can etch trim or lift edges of film and wraps.

Safe Settings

  • Keep it in the 1200-1900 PSI range for routine washing
  • Use a wide 25° or 40° nozzle - never a narrow, concentrated tip
  • Spray at a 30-45° angle, never straight-on into a panel

Safe Distance

  • Start about 1.5m away and only move closer if needed
  • Test on an inconspicuous spot first, especially near film or wrap edges
  • Never work closer than roughly 30cm to the surface

Mitts, Towels & Technique

Technique matters just as much as your tools. Work the car in sections from top to bottom, and treat wheels and tires as their own job with a dedicated mitt and bucket, done first - never after the body. That order matters because lower panels and rocker areas carry the heaviest contamination, and washing them last with the same mitt you used on the rest of the car would drag that grime right back across paint you've already cleaned; a second mitt reserved for lower panels solves this entirely.

When you make contact with the paint, use straight, overlapping strokes rather than circular scrubbing - circular motion concentrates whatever grit is trapped in the mitt into one small area and grinds it into the clear coat instead of lifting it away, which is one of the most common causes of the fine swirl marks you notice under direct sunlight. Rinse the mitt in your second bucket after every panel so it never carries contamination forward to the next one.

Drying deserves the same care as washing: a two-stage approach - a high-absorption waffle-weave towel to pull up the bulk of the water, followed by a soft plush microfiber towel for the final pass - removes moisture without dragging grit across the surface, which is exactly what happens when a single towel gets oversaturated on a dripping-wet car.

Tip: Don't Press Hard

Pressing hard hoping for a deeper clean increases scratch risk - let the soap and lubrication do the work.

Tip: Never Air Dry

Letting the car air dry in the sun almost always leaves hard-water mineral spots as it evaporates unevenly.

Washing a Ceramic-Coated Car

A ceramic coating changes what your paint can handle, but it doesn't change how often it needs attention. Because a coating creates a slick, hydrophobic surface, dirt and water bead up and slide off more easily - which often gives owners the impression they can wash less frequently.

In reality, contamination that lands on a coated surface can still bond over time if it's left long enough, so the same 1-2 week cadence still applies; the coating just makes each wash faster and safer.

What does change is your choice of products: stick to a coating-safe, pH-neutral shampoo, since standard products can gradually work against the very protection you paid for. A clay bar is still a useful tool for deep decontamination, but it's an occasional treatment, not a routine step.
