Do I Need to Polish Before Applying a Ceramic Coating?
Polishing a car before ceramic coating can seem like a lot of extra work. You might be wondering if you can skip it entirely. Here's why that's a bad idea, and why polishing doesn't have to be as hard as you think.
A ceramic coating doesn't fill in or hide existing defects - it locks in whatever condition the paint is already in. Worse, the added gloss and depth a coating provides acts like a magnifying glass: swirls, scratches, and haze that were only mildly visible before often look sharper and more pronounced once sealed underneath a coating, not less. Machine polishing is the only step that actually removes those defects - once the coating is cured over them, correcting the paint again means machine-polishing through part of the coating itself.
Surface prep also affects how well the coating performs. Leftover oxidation, contamination, or an uneven clear coat gives the coating a rougher, less consistent surface to bond to, which shows up as patchier application and a coating that's more prone to failing prematurely rather than lasting its full rated lifespan.

What Ceramic Coating Should I Use?

How Do I Apply a Ceramic Coating Without Messing It Up?
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is grabbing the most aggressive pad and going straight to work. In reality, the smartest way to coat your car is to work in small sections and let the coating tell you when it's ready to be levelled off.
Apply in overlapping crosshatch passes - straight lines running north-to-south across a small section, roughly 2x2 feet, then a second pass east-to-west over the same area - and coat panel by panel rather than the whole car at once, so you can manage flash time accurately instead of racing against product that's starting to cure before you've levelled it.

- Drizzle coating onto a smaller section. Apply in overlapping crosshatch passes, one section at a time, and overlapping by roughly 50% for full coverage
Level
- Look for flashing. Once the coating has flashed, wipe with a clean microfiber towel to level the coating, then flip the towel and buff off to remove any excess
Inspect
- Use an inspection light to check for high spots. Use a fresh microfiber towel to re-level any visible high spots, then repeat the process across all sections

High spots are areas where the coating hasn't fully levelled off - once the coating is fully cured, they can only be removed by polishing. Always inspect for high spots after applying and before it has time to cure.
How Long Does It Take for Ceramic Coatings to Cure?
You can't drive the car for at least an hour. You definitely can't wash it for at least a week. Those are all things you're not meant to do while ceramic coating cures - here's what happens, and why patience during this window matters more than most people expect.
Curing isn't just the coating drying - it's the SiO2 (or graphene-enhanced) chemistry cross-linking and hardening against the clear coat. That process happens in stages, each one needing different care, and rushing any of them risks a softer, less durable finish than the coating is actually capable of.
Initial Set-Up
- 1 hour: coating bonds with the clear coat. Leave the vehicle undisturbed for at least an hour following application
Initial Cure
- 24-48 hours: coating begins to harden. Avoid water exposure and heavy contact during this window after application
Full Cure
- 1-2 weeks: coating continues to cure. Avoid washing during at least the first week

Once the coating is cured, do NOT use automatic washes to clean your car. The harsh chemicals and abrasive brushes will reduce your coating's lifespan significantly through premature wear.
